Snowmobiling, 4-Wheeling, Off-Roading, MoreIf you have your own toys (or are renting) and would like us to be your local guide, we'd be happy to lead the way. We can get you into some really wild places, and once the engines are shut off, enjoy the peace , quiet, and views far and wide. Please call for availability and price. In any case, if you are interested in these sports, please read the following information. ATV, Dirt Bike Riding, and Off-RoadingAll-terrain vehicle (ATV) and off-road motorcycle and 4x4 trails are limited in New Hampshire, although about 1 in 100 residents own and register an ATV with the state OHRV (off highway recreational vehicles) division. There are more private landowners opening their wilderness habitats to responsible trail riding, although some organizations oppose trail riding because of erosion and pollution. If you're going to ride, please consider joining a local club to help maintain the trails and only ride when the ground is either frozen or dry, because trail maintenance is both timely and costly. Erosion of forest roads and trails happens faster by knobby tires on motor vehicles (and mountain bikes and horses), especially when the terrain is wet from snowmelt or rain. And it can rain and snow all year round here. Please respect natural environments. For example, if a trail has a muddy spot, go through it (not around it) so that widening of the trail (and loss of habitat) does not occur. Here are some off-roading links:
SnowmobilingSnowmobiles don't cause much erosion on the land when snow and ice cover the trails, and manufacturers are building more quiet machines with less emissions. The State of New Hampshire and local clubs maintain extensive winter trails, accessing Massachusetts, Vermont, Maine, and Quebec (check their registration policies if leaving New Hampshire). In order to register your own snowmachine in New Hampshire, you need to either join a local club or pay an extra fee to the state. This is to help educate yourself and pay for trail maintenance.
