Bicycle Tour Planned for Franconia Notch
The bike path through Franconia Notch State
Park will be the setting for an autumn tour on Sunday, September 26, with
naturalist Lucie LaPlante Villeneuve Villeneuve of Outdoor ESCAPES New Hampshire, LLC. Stops will
be made at points of interest regarding the natural history of the area.
There is evidence in the notch of geological processes that occurred over
the past three hundred million years--proof that the earth’s surface is
ever-changing. Volcanic activity, sedimentation, heat and pressure,
uplifting, glacial ice sheets, and weathering all played a part in creating
beautiful Franconia Notch.
An expert on moose, Ms. LaPlante will also
speak about the wildlife that inhabit the White Mountains. Many plant and
animal species thrive in this type of natural environment, even with extreme
weather and terrain. The leaves of the maple and birch trees should be at
their peak color around this time, providing a scenic background as the
bicyclists make their way between the mountains.
The paved bike path is a separate trail
through Franconia Notch—a good place to bike for those who haven’t done this
activity for a while, or want to try a “mountain bike.” Actual biking time
is about 1.5 hours (an hour uphill and ½ hour downhill). Any bike with many
gears would suit this trail. The fee for the guided tour is $35. Those who
need a bike can rent one from All Seasons Adventures in Lincoln, NH (603)
745-8600. Participants are asked to meet Ms. LaPlante in the Flume parking
lot at 11:00 A.M. (rain or shine) with a bag lunch, water, camera
(optional), and dressed for the weather of the day. The tour will end by
4:00 P.M.
