Outdoor ESCAPES New Hampshire, LLC
Experience
prime northern New England
moose habitat and learn all about the largest land mammal in North
America. On our full-day or longer "moose safari"
you will have the opportunity to look for tracks,
feeding areas, droppings (scat), beds, fur,
antlers, and other signs in
the Northern Forest. Your guide will try his/her best to help you spot these
solitary animals as they walk and feed in the boreal forest, or swim and
feed in wetlands areas. Moose eat
40-60 pounds of browse a day!
Sightings are not guaranteed, but you will have spent the day in their
territory learning all about them and their neighbors.
Activity and Location
depends on the season and local trail/water conditions. The moose population
density is greater northern New Hampshire, so most of our tours take place in
the Great North Woods region, but we can also provide tours further south
considering the distance you're willing to travel to meet your guide. From May to October is a great time to see
moose in rivers by canoeing and kayaking. We can also visit their woodlands
and wetlands habitats by hiking and mountain biking. A snowshoe or cross
country ski trek in the winter will be optimal for seeing moose, or at least
signs of them, in
their cooler mountain habitats. We can also take you for a drive in our
S.U.V. to try to spot moose April through October.
Duration and Price Our
full-day and multi-day moose tour packages are offered as focused, custom-guided, interpretive/photo tours
available year-round, for all ages and abilities. Example 1: A full-day
adventure tour starts at $193 for a party of one, and Example 2: A full-day SUV
tour stars at $275 for a party of one, with additional sliding-scale fees
depending on the mode of exploration, number of participants, number of
days/nights, and any recreation equipment rentals and lodging accommodations
needed. Meals are included.

Moose
are found in all regions of New Hampshire, although a higher population is
concentrated in the Great North Woods. They are big--an
adult moose in New Hampshire weighs about 1,000-1,500 pounds.

Over 200 moose are killed on New Hampshire's highways each year. When driving in
New Hampshire, actively look for moose all the time--you are in their
territory. Moose, usually solitary, can walk ten miles a day through
mountains and valleys, crossing or using the roads as pathways along their
route. They like the salt on and near the roads. Drive slow, avoid overriding your headlights at night,
and use caution around corners. Moose are dark at night and can dart into the road--and
stay there--as you
approach. So "Brake for moose" (stop!), look for other moose around, and wait
for them to move out of your way. If you wish to stop to view moose, pull off
the road out of traffic, and stay in your car. Moose are unpredictable.

Hunting
Over
the last 100 years, New Hampshire's landscape has changed to provide good
habitat for the comeback of the moose population. Increasing beaver population
has created more wetlands; and areas of former farmlands, forest fires, and
clear-cuts are regenerating forests naturally. The population of moose today is
estimated around 7,000. With no natural predators (formerly wolves and mountain
lions until the early 1900s), the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department now
allows a controlled hunt each fall. 300-400 moose are hunted by residents and
visitors each year to help keep NH's moose population in check. Moose meat is
lean and tasty. You won't find wild game meat for sale in stores or restaurants--it's not legal because it is not tested or treated for diseases like
farm animals. Natives love wild game because we know where our food comes from.
